Khans of Tarkir

Khans of Tarkir

Set Name: Khans of Tarkir
Overview: This block is set on the world of Tarkir, a plane once ruled by powerful dragons that are long since extinct. It is the home plane of Sarkhan Vol, the half-mad Planeswalker first introduced in Shards of Alara. Tarkir is ruled by five warlike clans; Abzan, Jeskai, Sultai, Mardu, and Temur, each venerating a different aspect of dragonkind, and each corresponding to a color wedge, which is two allied colors and their mutual enemy color. Sarkhan has returned to Tarkir seeking the dragon Planeswalker Ugin, who originally trapped the Eldrazi, in order to enlist Ugin’s help in recapturing the unleashed titans. Sarkhan discovers that the extinction of dragons on Tarkir was caused by a cataclysmic battle between Ugin and the master manipulator Nicol Bolas. Sarkhan learns that Ugin was killed in the battle and determines to travel back in time to save him.

Perhaps the most notable cards included in Khans of Tarkir are reprints. Originally debuting in Onslaught, the ally colored fetchlands see play in every format they are legal in. These lands had become extremely pricey due to their ubiquitous play and single printing. Two super powerful draw spells were also printed, taking advantage of the Delve mechanic. Treasure Cruise and Dig Through Time absolutely dominated their brief time in Modern and Legacy. Even in exile they remain Commander and Cube powerhouses.

Each clan featured its own unique mechanic. Abzan used Outlast, which allowed creatures to tap, pay their Outlast cost, and add +1/+1 counters. Jeskai created the Prowess mechanic, which gives a creature +1/+1 until end of turn if you cast an instant or sorcery. Sultai used the Delve mechanic, which returned from Time Spiral to make spells cheaper by exiling cards from your graveyard. The Mardu clan featured Raid, a mechanic which triggers an ability if a creature enters the battlefield after another creature has attacked this turn. Finally, the Temur clan uses the Ferocious mechanic, which rewards you for having a creature with power four or greater.
